what is Team Research (BIOL 4450)?
Team Research (BIOL 4450) is an opportunity for KSU undergraduates to earn course credit for authentic research experiences. This course will meet from 11 AM – 1:45 PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays (2 credit hours) in Fall 2025. See below for more details about the research, skills you'll build, and how to enroll. Please reach out to Todd Pierson (tpierso3@kennesaw.edu) with any questions.
build field and laboratory skills
While working towards a common research goal, students will learn and use the following techniques:
-
wildlife sampling and identification
-
environmental data collection
-
DNA sample collection, extraction, PCR
-
basic geospatial analysis
-
statistical analysis and figure creation
-
scientific presentation skills

our study system
Our research is focused on understanding alternative reproductive tactics in salamanders. These are discrete differences in breeding strategy (and morphology) found in a single population. We'll visit streams in metro Atlanta, collect DNA samples and environmental data, and assess how stream variables affect the relative success of "searching" and "guarding" male phenotypes. You can read more about this research here and here.
